This is the first step after installing WordPress for those who just begin working with WordPress. In this, you will learn How to install a WordPress plugin.

WordPress Plugins are like applications that help us to add new features to WordPress and run your website smoothly. Thousands of WordPress plugins are available to download for free and some plugins are also paid. WordPress Plugins like, Contact Us Form, Slideshow, etc.

How to install a WordPress Plugin?

There are thousands of free plugins available for download on WordPress.org Official Website. There are different ways to add a plugin to the WordPress website. The easiest way is to install/Add a WordPress Plugin through plugin Search. All you need to do is just do a search for a plugin that you want to install and then just download and activate it.

But, You can only download free plugins only and the plugin must be in Plugin directory otherwise you cannot install a plugin which is not in the plugin directory.

To add a WordPress Plugin, Go to Plugins >> Add New page inside in your WordPress Admin Area.

Now, Search for the Plugin that you want to install on your WordPress website like, Yoast SEO. After this, you just need to click on the “Install Now” button and then “Activate”.

WordPress plugin can be installed on your site, but it will not work unless you activate it.

That’s all, You have installed WordPress Plugin successfully. Now you can see the installed plugins under the Plugin area.

How to install a Plugin through WordPress Admin Plugin Upload?

The WordPress Plugins which are not listed in the Plugin directory can be installed by this way. And, these plugins which are not listed in the directory cannot be installed by the above method.

So, the Upload option can be used to install such plugins. All you need to do is, Go to Plugins >> Add New then you will be able to see the “Upload Plugin” button. After that, click on the ‘Upload Plugin’ button on top of the page.

After that, You will be able to see a page to upload the already downloaded plugin. Click on the “Choose file” button and select the plugin.

Note: Plugin files must be compressed and is in the .zip format only.

After you have selected the file, you need to click on the ‘Install Now’ button.

WordPress will now upload the plugin file from your computer and install it for you. You will see a success message like this after the installation is finished.

Activate the WordPress Plugin

Once installed, you need to click on the Activate Plugin link to start using the plugin.

How to install a WordPress Plugin manually using FTP?

This method is not easy for beginners who just installed WordPress but I will give you step by step guide to install a WordPress plugin manually using FTP.

First you will need to download the plugin’s file which must be in .zip format. And then, you have to extract the zip file on your computer.

After you extract the zip file, a new folder with the same name as the .zip file will be created. Now, you have to upload this folder manually to your website using an FTP client like, Filezilla.

You would need to access your host through the FTP client. If you do not have your FTP username and password, then contact your WordPress hosting provider and ask them.

Open the FTP client on your computer and connect to your website using the login credentials. Once connected, you need to go to the /wp-content/plugins/ folder on your website.

Next, upload or drag and drop the folder you extracted from the zip file to the /wp-content/plugins/ folder on your web server.

After the plugin successfully uploaded, you need to visit the WordPress admin area and click on the plugins option. Now, you will be able to see all installed plugins and you can deactivate or remove them easily.

You can deactivate one or more by selecting all the plugins or you can just click on the deactivate and then remove the WordPress plugin. Even you can remove the WordPress plugin the same way as you added via FTP.
